How to install car horn: 5 steps to follow. Find the old horn assembly. When replacing something busted or old, you first need to find the location of the old one. For car horns, this is usually mounted behind the grille of the car, though some cars have them positioned behind the radiator core specifically on the radiator support.

This is a tight spot, so you'll need proper lighting, gloves for hand protection, and possibly even some eye protection if the old horn can only be accessed from below the engine bay. Also note that in some car models, you might need to remove the front fascia of the car. So you'll probably need some wrenches and/or screwdrivers as well. Before doing anything in relation to a car's electrical system, always disconnect the car's battery.

Remove the electrical connectors on the old horn. Usually, commercially available horns will come with a tab. This tab can be pushed down and be slid out to disconnect it from the car's electrical system. In other models, however, you might need to unscrew some wires. Remove the old horn assembly.

Horns are usually held by one or two retaining fasteners. These commonly use a bolt or a screw. Once these are unscrewed, you can now pull out the old horn.

Before doing anything else, do consult the new horn's instruction manual. Also, be sure to remove any of the protective packagings that the new horn assembly came with. Place the new horn, and check whether it is coming in contact with any moving parts or other wires.

If not, install the fasteners and then plug in the electrical connector. Do note that some car horns might have some special wire harnesses or requirements for installation like a grounding wire. For this, Professional Installation Is Highly Recommended.

For best results, mount horns in an unobstructed opening for sound to carry straight ahead. If possible mount horn with slight downward angle to allow moisture to drain out. For roof mount installation: If vehicle is equipped with interior roof trim panel, remove to install horns. Holes in position desired for horn.

Place mounting pad between base of horn and top of vehicle roof. Place tensions washer on mounting elbow, next thread the elbow into the base of the horn from under the roof. Insert (2) screws through hole of horn base and roof, attach lock washer and hex nut. Connect nylon tubing to mounting elbow using brass insert and compression nut.

Then run tube down to tank location and replace interior roof trim panel. For projector support installation: Slide the projector support toward the horn bell until grommet firmly contacts with horn projector body. Drill (2) 5/16 in holes (use mounting gasket for template). Place gasket between projector support base and top of mounting surface. Insert (2) screws through hole of projector support base and mounting surface, attach lock washer and hex nut.

(See Group I for sample installation). Select mounting location for air tank keeping in mind the orientation of the tank and visibility of the pressure gauge. Use thread sealant on all uncoated pipe threads components. Thread 2 brass fittings and check valveinto brass cross, then install the brass fitting into either one of the air tank outlet. Next thread the solenoid threaded inlet into the brass fitting.

Thread the tire valve into remaining opening threaded hole in brass cross. Connect nylon tubing to solenoid outlet using brass insert and compression nut. Thread brass tee fitting into the remaining tank outlet. Thread the pressure gauge and pressure switch into the tee. CAUTION: Tighten pressure switch and pressure gauge on brass hex body only. To mount tank drill (2) 11/32 in. Diameter holes spaced 4 in. Apart in a rigid surface. Insert tank studs through the holes and secure with locknuts.
